Start out with the best of intentions, gain some traction, feel it building, then a wheel falls off. Building lasting, transformational change into your leadership is hard, real hard. I'm sharing some personal insights into what I've learned through my career from others and from myself. I hope you find this of value.
"Know yourself. Go deeper than you've ever been before". Sounds easy, right? Far from it. Working through the complexities of what makes you tick as a person, a leader, a role model is damn hard. But as you uncover your core purpose, your 'why', your ultimate passion, you gain clarity.
Be prepared to rehash memories that are uncomfortable. Digging into your own history will uncover hurt, resentment, anger, frustration. But that's ok. All of those experiences have lead you down a path. Your journey is uniquely your own. Find the value that you hold, it's there, and share it with others.
Find quiet time, think hard about what drives you. Relive past experiences, great and challenging, look for learning's, focus on moments of meaning. What did they teach you? How did you respond? Learn to reduce inner chat. Leverage techniques like mindfulness, meditation and/or yoga to centre your thoughts and find inner clarity. Zero your expectations, take one step at a time. No KPIs, no targets, just listen.
Transformational leadership is tough. It can smash the most experienced of leaders. Successfully navigating yourself and others through change requires a strong sense of self. Understanding 'you' takes time, but every step you take builds strength in purpose and clarity in who you are. When a wheel falls off, stop, reattach the wheel, check the rest of the car, and commence the journey that you started. If the wheel keeps falling off, you might need a mechanic ;)
